Can Anyone Learn How to Jumpstart a Car?

Yes. Learning how to jumpstart a BMW takes a little time and effort, but the setup is easier than you might think. All you need is a set of jumper cables and a good Samaritan with a working vehicle. And whether you have an SUV or a coupe, learning how to jumpstart a car is pretty much the same for any make and model. With that in mind, let’s get started.

How to Jumpstart a BMW: Connecting Your Cables

After you find your jumper cables and your good Samaritan, you’ll need to set up your work area. Both vehicles need to park with hoods facing one another but not touching. This allows you easy access to the battery. Turn off both engines, pop the hoods, and grab your jumper cables:

  1. Attach one of the red clamps to your own BMW vehicle’s positive (red) terminal.
  2. Attach the other red clamp to the positive (red) terminal on the assisting vehicle
  3. Attach the black clamp to the assisting vehicle’s negative (black) terminal.
  4. Attach the other black clip to any unpainted metal surface on your vehicle.

It’s important that the clamps don’t touch one another during this process. If they do, you could create sparks and risk starting a fire.

How to Jumpstart a BMW: Charging the Battery

After your setup is complete, it’s time to get charging. Your helper will turn on their engine to get the process started. Wait a few minutes to let your battery charge, and then try to start it. If it doesn’t work immediately, try again in a few minutes. Once your car is in motion, you can remove the jumper cables in the opposite order you attached them. Be sure to drive around Fort Collins and Greeley for around 30 minutes to let the battery continue to charge. Otherwise, your battery will be too weak to start the next time you try to start the car!
